To drive those vehicles in NSW, find out what type of license is required.

Class of Car Licence

A vehicle that does not exceed 4.5 tonnes of Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) can be powered and can hold up to 12 adults, including the driver. Motor bikes and motor trikes do not have this. You can tow a single trailer of up to 9 tons GVM or to the requirements of the manufacturer (whichever is less).

A permit for a car learner may be issued from the age of 16. From the age of 18, a car driver's license can be issued. This is shown as 'Car' on a NSW driver's license under license form.

Check how to get your truck driver's license for students or learner permit or probationary driver licence.

Licence Categories for  Heavy Vehicle Trucks

There are five NSW license groups for heavy vehicles. Throughout Australia, these licenses are accepted. If you travel interstate, however, you will need to get a driver's license in that state. It is best to consult with the interstate licensing authority to find out how and when you need to do this.

You would need a NSW heavy vehicle licence to drive a truck or bus with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 4.5 tonnes or a bus that seats more than 12 adults.

In five different categories, heavy vehicle licenses are issued:

  • Rigid Light (LR)
  • Medium Rigid to Medium (MR)
  • Heavy Rigid in Heavy (HR)
  • Heavy Combination (HC) Licence
  • Combination of Multi (MC).

These license types for heavy vehicles have different criteria for eligibility. The license categories below indicate what you can drive and when you are qualified to attempt a specific category review.

You Just Need a Car License for Trucks to Drive.

It's not easy to get your truck license, nor should it be, but what if you want, or really need, some truck size, or just a small truck, because the work you're doing needs something larger than a giant one-ton ute? Are there trucks on a car license that can be driven? How light will a "light truck" be? The response to all of your truck license questions is right here.

What Truck Should I Drive with a Licence for a Car?

The good news is that the largest truck that can be driven on a car license is very high, the somewhat worrying news is that it means that a lot of people you see trying to park or maneuver, a Toyota Yaris is legally permitted to hit the road in something big.

You are qualified to pilot a 4.5-tonne truck with your car license, which is called a light truck. If you buy your cars by weight, like potatoes, that sounds easy enough, but there's actually a little more to it. The 4.5-tonne cap covers the truck and the load it holds, which suggests that the truck itself needs to weigh much less.
